Anzac Day Commemoration

In a warm 6.00 am of Balikpapan, people are gathering surrounding the monument of Australia and Balikpapan. This 25 April is commemorated by Australians and New Zealand as the Anzac (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) day. It was a day in 1945 when about 229 Australian and New Zealand troops died in fighting the Japanese occupation in Balikpapan. It is a commemoration to the lives of Australians and New Zealanders lost in that war as well and in subsequent years. The meaning of the day has been further broadened to include those killed in all the military operations in which the countries have been involved. Hundreds of Australian attending the ceremony is part of the dead troop’s family. The activities of the event are from the Dawn Service laying wreath, breakfast and footy competition. Veterans also being invited to attend the ceremony and to lay the wreaths followed by all participants the footy competition is begun and scores by the Jakarta Bintangs 4-10-34 with its opponent Borneo Bears 2-4-16.
